What do you do when someone copies you?
A kid at school makes something that looks just like Kit's Steady Sippy and says he made it first. Kit's stomach drops. Nothing is missing, but something feels wrong. It feels yucky inside.
Sparks introduces Elias, a gentle boy with curly hair, kind eyes, and a small hourglass he carries everywhere. When things get tense, Elias flips the hourglass and says, "Let's take a breath." The sand falls. Kit breathes. The anger starts to settle.
Then Elias says something brave: "Let's TALK to him." Kit is nervous, but he walks over. Kit speaks honestly: "I made that first. It makes me sad when you say you did." The other kid's face changes. "Oh. I'm sorry. I did not think about it." He was not trying to be mean. He just did not think. Kit offers to help him make his own invention, and a conflict turns into a friendship.
This book opens the Growing phase (Books 13 through 20). It tackles the hardest moment in any creator's journey: seeing someone take credit for your work. But it deliberately avoids making the other child a villain. Most copying at this age comes from admiration. The lesson is that talking solves more than yelling, and most people will do the right thing when they understand how you feel.
