The story. Kit whistles on the way to the playground, and a bird whistles back; Kit's little sister Mia laughs that the bird likes him. Then a kid climbs up high with a cup holder that looks just like Kit's own invention, The Steady Sippy, and says he made it first, so Kit copied HIM. Kids whisper "Kit copied" all the way to the swings, Kit's hands go tight, and Kit is MAD. Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and light who woke that morning in Kit's garage lightbulb, lands on his shoulder and sends him to Elias, a quiet boy with an hourglass, who has Kit watch the sand until his hands go soft. Then Kit walks all the way across the wide playground, Elias beside him, and says it in a small voice: "It makes me SAD when you say you made it first." The kid says sorry, and the two build side by side, each cup holder stamped with its maker's own mark, Kit's gear and the kid's lightning bolt.

How you read it. Your child whistles like the bird, then claps three times to wake Sparks and copies her three tiny claps back. When the book asks "Is that what happened?" your child shouts "NO!" Your child breathes with the hourglass sand, in and out, until Kit's hands go soft. Then your child counts Kit's seven steps across the playground and says the SAD line with Kit. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Kit made a cup holder. A playground kid says Kit copied him. Saying how you feel, even softly, is the next step. Most of us have seen a child go quiet when accused unfairly. This book gives your child a NO to shout at the claim, a breath, and a long walk back to say so. It gives you three words for that quiet moment: say it anyway.
