The story. Every evening Grandma waters her flowers, and Kit notices that she talks to them. "Hello, beautiful," she whispers. Her tea cup tips every day, too. So Kit decides to make her a cup that cannot tip, a Steady Sippy with flowers painted on it, ready by tea time. Not for Kit. For GRANDMA. Shhh! It's a SURPRISE! Kit wakes Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and light who sleeps in his garage lightbulb, and the two of them work at the house of a neighbor named Ama, so Grandma will not see. His painted flowers come out as blobs, and Ama says Grandma will know he painted them. They wrap it in fabric (fold, tuck, fold). Grandma walks right past the window. Kit ties the ribbon. The ribbon ties Kit. When the kettle whistles, Kit knocks on her door. Grandma opens it, her eyes get shiny, and she asks, "You MADE this? For ME?"

How you read it. Read it in a whisper until the door opens. Your child whispers "Hello, beautiful" with Grandma, and wakes Sparks with three claps as quiet as they can. Every "Shhh! It's a SURPRISE!" gets a finger on the lips. Your child knocks with Sparks, folds and tucks with both hands, freezes like a statue when Grandma walks past, and whistles like the kettle. Then, at the door, your child gets to shout "SURPRISE!" out loud. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Grandma's teacup tips. Kit makes her a cup that cannot tip. Making it is one thing. Giving it away is the next step. Most of us have seen a child find giving hard.
