The story. Kit notices things. A wobbly table, a drippy faucet, a cup that is about to TIP. Splash, and Kit's little sister Mia cries and will not stop. Kit runs to the garage and claps awake Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and golden light who sleeps in an old lightbulb on the shelf. Then he grabs his fix-it box: a new cup, a silly dance, his beanie on Mia's head. NO, NO, NO, and louder every time. Sparks covers her ears and says they need Bao, Kit's friend with a heart on his vest, who asks one question: how does Mia FEEL? Kit does not know, so they practice on the neighbors. Mr. Gomez pulling at a jar lid is FRUSTRATED. The dog walker tangled in her leashes is SILLY. The girl who cannot reach the fountain feels small, very quiet. And Bao, when Kit asks how HE feels, is HAPPY, because nobody ever asks him. Kit runs home, looks at Mia's face, sits down beside her, and makes the sad face too. Mia stops crying. Kit jumps up: "I feel EXCITED!" The tippy cup can wait.

How you read it. Your child cries like Mia, then claps three times to wake Sparks, and claps LOUDER when she does not pop out. Each time a fix fails, your child shouts "NO!" and covers both ears, like Sparks. Your child guesses each neighbor's feeling from the face, then makes that face: frustrated, silly, small, happy. Then runs in place with Kit, makes the sad face beside Mia, jumps up EXCITED, and finishes the line "I feel..." Six faces by the end: sad, frustrated, silly, small, happy, excited. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Every inventor starts somewhere. Kit starts by naming a feeling. Most of us have tried three fixes on a crying child and made it louder. When Kit's sister cannot stop crying, this book gives your child a face game, frustrated to silly to sad: guess it, then make it. It gives you one question: how do you feel?
