The story. Every day Kit builds in the garage, and every day a small girl watches through the fence, just two eyes and two butterfly bows. "Who that?" whispers Mia, Kit's little sister. Kit claps three times, and Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and light, pops out of his old lightbulb. Then a tiny knock at the garage door. It is Lily, hugging her stuffed bunny Biscuit, who keeps falling off her bed. THUMP, one. THUMP, two. THUMP, three. Kit could fix it in one minute, and he does not. He kneels down and asks how it makes her feel, hands her the pencil to draw an idea, and sits on his own hands so he cannot take over while Lily builds with cloth, clothespins and tape. Her first try falls apart. "ALMOST. Which ONE thing, Lily?" She picks one thing to change: one more clothespin, and Biscuit swings in The Bunny Hammock. Lily whispers "I made that," and Kit asks her to say it LOUDER.

How you read it. Your child claps three times to wake Sparks from her lightbulb. Pats the floor and counts every THUMP as Biscuit falls. Shouts "HANDS, Kit!" each time Kit's hands sneak out to help, then sits on both hands and counts to five. Says "I MADE THAT!" with Lily, bigger each time. Whispers good night to Biscuit at the end. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

A bunny hammock would take Kit a minute. Letting Lily make it is the next step. Most of us have taken over. This book gives your child thumps to count as the bunny falls, and a game: when Kit's hands sneak out, shout HANDS. It gives you four words: sit on your hands.
