The story. It is late and Kit cannot sleep. Everyone sees the big stars out the window, but Kit notices a small one, tucked between two bright ones. His little sister Mia whispers "Sleep." Instead Kit tiptoes to the garage and claps three times, softly, to wake Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and light who sleeps in the old lightbulb. He shows her his big book of inventors. Not one of them looks like him. Sparks points out the window, and a firebird named Ember flies in, made of fire and light. Warm. Quiet. Slow. Blow softly on one of Ember's feathers and it opens, and inside is someone who was small once: a girl from long ago who made medicine, a boy who asked too many questions, and the man with the longest beard in Kit's book, as a baby banging a pot with a spoon. "They were ALL small once?" "Every one," says Ember. The last feather holds Kit's own face. One feather more holds Mia. Kit draws a new face in the big book, his own, small, in his beanie, and says good night to the small star.

How you read it. This is the quiet one, for bedtime, so read it slowly and softly. Your child finds the small star on the first page. Your child claps three times, as softly as slippers, to wake Sparks, then yawns a tiny yawn with her. Before each feather you ask "Who is in the feather?" and your child blows on the page. Whoooo. After each one you whisper the same words together, "Small. Like Kit. Like you," and touch your child's chest on "you." Near the end your child points at themself and looks at their own hands. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

The inventors in Kit's book are old men with beards. None looks like him. Putting his own face in that book is the next step. Most of us have heard a child say it: I'm too small. This bedtime book gives your child a firebird's feathers. Blow on one and an inventor appears as a small child. It gives you a line: they were all small once.
