The story. Last night something glowed in Kit's garage, and this morning it is still humming. Kit opens the door, trips on a box, and out rolls a lightbulb that glows brighter and brighter until POP: out comes Sparks, a tiny fairy made of little gears and golden light. She glows when she sees a thing that somebody made. She zooms to the bicycle, the hammer and Kit's own belt, shouting "Someone MADE that!" at each one, and gets brighter every time. Kit wants a turn and points at a rock. NO, that is just a rock, and her light flickers; a spiderweb is YES, a spider made it, but all that zooming has worn her out, and she crawls back into her bulb and whispers, "I need a MADE thing. Quick!" Kit points at a tool on the wall, Sparks pops out brighter than ever, and when Kit's little sister Mia arrives with her red ball, the two friends decide to make something too.

How you read it. Your child hums the hum, waves hello to Sparks, and spins to keep up with her. When she gets too bright, your child squints like Kit. When she zips off to hide behind the paint cans and under the bench, your child spots her glow and shouts "THERE you are!" At the rock your child shouts "NO!", and at the spiderweb wiggles ten fingers like spider legs. When Sparks fades, your child points at something made in your own room and says it with Kit: "Someone MADE that!" Near the end Sparks lands on Kit's nose, your child goes cross-eyed with him, and then answers one question: what would YOU make? The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Every inventor starts somewhere. Kit starts by asking who made it. Most of us have answered that in two words: the store. When Sparks dims, this book gives your child a hunt for made things, rock NO, spiderweb YES, and the shout that wakes her: someone MADE that. It gives you one question: who made that?
