The story. Kit notices a paper boat floating in a puddle, and his little sister Mia points at it too. Who made it? Nobody says, so nobody knows. Kit has a made thing of his own in his bag: The Steady Sippy, the sippy cup he built. At the playground he holds it up and says "I made this" so small that nobody turns around. A big kid laughs, Kit's face goes hot, and he hides under the slide. Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and light who rides on his beanie, glows a small glow: nobody hears under the slide either. Ren, a boy who speaks softly but firmly, walks Kit back out to the middle of the playground. Kit whispers "I made that." Nobody hears. One step up the climbing frame, he says it, and a few hear. From the very top, with the biggest breath of his life: I MADE THAT! The whole playground cheers. Then the big kid comes back with a box that has one wheel on it, says "I made this" very small, and Kit tells him the one word Ren told Kit: louder. The box rolls in a circle in the sand, and everybody cheers again. On the way home the paper boat is still in the puddle, and Kit still wonders who made it.

How you read it. Your child wakes Sparks from her lightbulb with three soft claps, then three LOUD ones. At each of Kit's tries you ask "Did anybody hear?" and your child answers NO, a few, or EVERYBODY. Your child whispers "I made that" with Kit, then says it, then takes one big breath and shouts it. When the box with one wheel rolls, your child cheers. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Making a thing is one step. Saying you made it is the next. Most of us have seen a child go quiet when a big kid laughs. When Kit says it and nobody hears, this book gives your child a volume ladder to climb: whisper, say, SHOUT. It gives your child one question: did anybody hear? It gives you one word: louder. Big kids need it too.
