The story. Everyone walks right past the garden wall. Not Kit. He crouches to watch a ladybug climb a crack, one tiny step at a time. Across the street, Mr. Gomez has an old jam jar full of shiny buttons. Sparks, Kit's tiny glowing fairy friend, dives right in. Mr. Gomez does not see her and twists the lid on tight, and now she is shut inside. Kit pulls. Kit shakes. Kit even sits on the jar. Is the lid open? NO! Then his friend Naya arrives with her magnifying glass and does the one thing Kit has not tried: she LOOKS. Close. CLOSER. Purple jam, stuck all around the lid. Warm water, twist, POP, and out zooms Sparks. Now puzzles are everywhere: a water fountain too high for tiptoes, a dog walker tangled in leashes, and a cat asleep on a wall. Is the cat a puzzle? NO! Cats are supposed to do that. Back home, Kit's little sister Mia reaches for her cup and it tips. Nobody has to say it for him. Kit says it himself: "Uh oh! I see a PUZZLE!"

How you read it. Your child whispers "I'm looking" with Kit, then claps three times to wake Sparks. At every try on the jar your child shouts "NO!" and spins around like dizzy Sparks. Your child makes a magnifying glass with one hand and looks. Then comes the line for the rest of the book, said with Naya: "Uh oh! A PUZZLE!" There is a high five to give, tiptoes to stand on, and a head to shake at the cat. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Every inventor starts somewhere. Kit starts by seeing the puzzle. Most of us have seen a lid, a zipper or a knot win. This book gives your child a puzzle hunt, lid to fountain to cat, and one move for any stuck thing: look first. It gives you four words to ask when something is stuck: what is the puzzle?
