The story. Kit makes things, and today he is counting six ants on one crumb when Zara calls from across the street: "KIT! I need an INVENTOR!" Three claps wake Sparks, Kit's tiny fairy helper, and Kit picks up the cup holder he made, The Steady Cubby. Zara's lemonade stand has a long line and a row of ten cups, and one bump of the table sends them over. A cup tips over. Nine left. Another. Eight. Zara mops and mops. Kit's cup holder would fix it, but Kit steps back to the big tree beside the stand and holds it a little tighter. What if she breaks it? What if everyone thinks Zara made it? Sparks sends him back: ask Zara, she has a deal to offer. Zara's deal: she uses it, she tells everyone Kit made it, and she shares her lemonade. Kit holds it out, pulls it back, and holds it out again. With three cups left, he lets go. Zara sets a cup in the holder and asks, TIP? No tip! And Zara tells the whole line, "Kit invented this!"

How you read it. Your child counts the ants and claps three times to wake Sparks the fairy. Your child holds up ten fingers for Zara's ten cups, then folds one down for every cup that tips. When Kit offers his cup holder, your child holds out both hands and pulls them back. Then your child shakes somebody's hand on the deal. In the second half you ask "TIP?" and your child answers "No tip!" At the end you clink cups. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Kit made a cardboard cup holder. Now a friend needs it, and letting her use it is the next step. Most of us have seen a child not let go. When a friend's lemonade spills, this book gives your child tipping cups to count, a hand to offer and pull back, and a cheer to shout: No tip! It gives you one promise to make: I will tell everyone you made it.
