The story. Kit's little sister Mia is asleep, and her red ball has bounced down the steps and out the gate. Kit has to find it before she wakes up. He looks UP, and it is a bird building a nest. DOWN, a flower in a crack. LEFT, a puddle with the whole sky in it. RIGHT, a puppy chasing its tail, and there is the ball. Four things to show Mia when she wakes up. Then, at bedtime, something hums and glows under the garage door.

How you read it. Your child points where Kit looks and shouts "NO!" at every find that is not the ball, until the one big "YES!" Along the way your child bounces a hand with the ball, yips with the puppy, and counts the finds on four fingers. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

Every inventor starts somewhere. Kit starts by noticing. Most of us have hurried a child past something worth a look. This book gives your child a looking game, up, down, left and right, and gives you a question for every walk: what do you see?
