The story. Kit's little sister Mia has a name for everything in the house. CUP! SHOE! KIT! Everything but one. Kit has made something new, a machine with a light on top and two buttons, and Mia wants it. "Give me the... the... THING!" Kit brings a box. A gear. A lightbulb. Wrong, wrong, wrong, and the stomps get louder. Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and light who lives in Kit's garage, fetches Priya, a girl who tastes words: say a name and her face shows what it tastes like. Kit offers names for her to try. "The Box" makes her crunch like a cracker. "The Ding Dong Blinky Bonker" bounces her off her stool. "Bob" makes her yawn. Then Priya sniffs the air, follows her nose to the kitchen stove, and says what she smells: crispy, spicy. The machine gets a name that fits: The Crispy-Spicy Idea Maker. Mia says it, and asks for it, and gets it. First try.

How you read it. When Mia names everything in the house, your child points at their own nose and says its name. Your child claps three times to wake Sparks from her lightbulb, and stomps when Mia stomps. At every name Kit tries, you ask "Is THAT its name?" and your child shouts "NO!" Your child crunches with Priya, bounces with Priya, and yawns with Priya. When the right name turns up, you both say it slow, loud, soft and silly. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

A made thing needs a name, or nobody can ask for it. Most of us have seen a child stomp for a thing they cannot name. When Kit's sister cannot ask for what he made, this book gives your child a name taste test, with a crunch, a boing and a yawn, and the right name said slow, loud, soft and silly. It gives you one question: what do we call it?
