The story. Something red is flapping on the roof, and only Kit stops to look up. It is a kite, hooked on one little nail, and it belongs to Mia, Kit's little sister. Kit claps three times, and Sparks, his best friend, a tiny glowing fairy, pops out of the lightbulb in the garage. Far away a dark cloud rumbles. Kit jumps for the kite. Too high. So he looks instead, says out loud that he is scared, draws a pole with a hook in chalk on the driveway, and builds one from a broom handle, a mop handle and a bent coat hanger. First try: the hook swings past the string. OOPS! ALMOST! Second try: the pole snaps. Taped back together, the pole is long enough, but Kit is not tall enough. With the first drops falling, Kit climbs one step of a little stool, one hand flat on the wall, Mia holding the bottom of the pole, and on THREE the hook catches. Down comes the kite, into Mia's arms. They run inside from the rain, and Sparks unrolls a long golden scroll: seven pictures of what Kit did that afternoon, each one labeled I will. Look. Feel. Draw. Build. Try. Share. Help. That is his promise, and he has already kept every line. There is room at the bottom for one more, and Kit writes it himself: I will never, ever stop asking WHAT IF?

How you read it. Your child claps three times to wake Sparks from her lightbulb. Pats both knees for the thunder. Jumps and reaches for the kite. Puts a hand on the heart and says "I'm scared" with Kit. Draws the pole in the air, stacks fists to build it, and shouts OOPS! ALMOST! at both misses. Wobbles both knees on the stool, counts ONE, TWO, THREE for the big pull, and runs in place from the rain. Each time Kit does a line of his promise, your child says it with him: I will LOOK. FEEL. DRAW. BUILD. TRY. SHARE. HELP. By the end your child can run through all seven fast, with the moves. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.

The last step is trying while scared. Most of us have seen a child stop at I can't. This book gives your child a pole to build, two misses to shout at, OOPS and ALMOST, and seven pictures of all Kit did: his promise. It gives you four words: be scared and try.
