The story. Under the porch a cricket sings, and it stops every time Kit creeps close. It only sings when nobody is looking. Kit knows how that feels. In the garage, Sparks, the tiny fairy of gears and light, pops out of her lightbulb and takes a bow. She LOVES it when somebody is looking. Kit wishes he had some of that, because tomorrow is show and tell, and he is going to show the cup he made, The Steady Sippy, which holds juice so it never tips over. What if the words hide? Layla, a girl with a BIG voice and a BIGGER smile, gives Kit three things to hold on to: say your NAME, say what you MADE, then SMILE. He practices on the stuffed animals, and the bear falls over. Stop. One big breath. Look at the thing. Start again. He practices on Mia, Kit's little sister, who claps and claps, and on the mirror. Then he is on the rug at school with three children ahead of him, then two, then one.

How you read it. Your child chirps like the cricket and goes quiet on STOP. Your child claps three times to wake Sparks and takes a bow with her. Your child counts NAME, MADE, SMILE on three fingers each time they come up, and takes one big breath with Kit when the words hide. Your child claps with Mia, shows you a smile at the mirror, counts down three, two, one on the rug, and cheers when Kit gets all the words out. The story runs about five minutes aloud. After it comes a short talk page for the two of you, with one question to ask and one line to say together.
